Why Ecotourism and The Eco Gypsy?Posted By : admin | November 18, 2013 | 4 comment(s)
There seems to be a lot of misconceptions about Ecotourism, which was one of the main reasons of founding The Eco Gypsy. People regard ecotourism as something of a hardship or a not particularly ‘glamorous’. This could not be further from the truth, eco properties around the world do not only give you the most incredible experience immersed in the environment you are in, but are also the most fulfilling and fascinating holidays you will experience. The Eco Gypsy was founded to give a beautiful and inspiring magazine to people who are looking for a responsible holiday, but feel they may be compromising or do not know where to start.
I was at a loss to find an ecotravel magazine that gave me the same quality as a mainstream travel magazine. I decided set up my own online too as not only is it global and more ecofriendly, but we can also add the latest news to existing properties and add amazing new places to current and past issues. Most eco properties do tend to be in the luxury end pricing wise. However as you can see in our Ecoescapes section, they support vast areas of land, conservation projects, communities and sustainable building and energy practices. We also feature plenty of mid range that contributes to all these factors on a small scale. Visually I think a responsible holiday offers you so much more, as the properties are dedicated to conserving nature or architecture and culture. The other problem when choosing an ecoescape is ‘greenwashing’ where a hotel makes a token effort at sustainability and claims to be ‘eco’. Giving you the option not to wash your sheets everyday, whilst consuming vast amounts of resources does not make a hotel an ecotourism destination. Admittedly some hotels have very good eco policies but admit that they are not fully sustainable, but are making the effort.
We try and bring you an unbiased view of the hotels that are the best in their region for eco responsibility in tourism. In terms of world resources there is also a huge need for ecotourism. Tourism is the largest industry in the world in terms of GDP. It is also one of the most wasteful. People protest against the oil industry but you do not see mass protest against the unnecessary waste in the tourism sector. By choosing an eco property you can offset some of this by their employment of alternative energy sources, such as solar panels, preserving water by using runoff and growing a proportion of the food consumed or sourcing it locally. Ecotravel means you are not only contributing towards supporting fair pay to local communities but also toward providing education, healthcare and community support programmes in areas such as sanitation and agriculture.
By choosing to go on an eco holiday you are helping entire communities. In the area of conservation the choice of ecotourism is vital. The money from both your stay and the revenue generated is used directly to train and fund rangers in Africa and other parts of the world. It pays for vital resources needed to monitor the animals and fight the ongoing war against poachers and the illegal trade in ivory and other animal parts. Ecotourism is therefore vital to the tourism sector to ensure the future of natural environments, ecosystems and local communities, some who are marginalized. Your decision to choose responsible travel can make a huge difference in the largest and most unmonitored industry in the world. A consumer shift to ecotourism is needed to help preserve the planet for the future. We hope you enjoy your journey around the world with us discovering eco properties and ethical designers.
