Sleep

01sleep

At home in Umalas, which is a village just outside Seminyak. I spend a lot of time travelling for work so it is wonderful to be home. We have an old style Bali house with open living and original carved wooden doors stuffed with antiques and textiles from Indonesia and bits and bobs we pick up on our journeys. Luckily we are on the river with big trees and greenery. There is a modern building wave going on in Bali that I do not understand as the old style Balinese architecture is so easy and beautiful for tropical living.

Next door is the Banjar that is like a hall for the village council, but is used for the community. Two nights a week the children practice gambelan, traditional Balinese instruments and music so our house is literally flooded with the sound. It makes me feel like I am in Bali, so many areas around us are becoming overdeveloped and there is not a hint of the arts, culture or spirit of Bali.

We occasionally rent out our house but usually to friends or personal introductions. Naturally all our ‘Ecoescapes’ and other ‘Gypsy Spots’ are my go to places when I need a break, and Desa Seni is the closest property to us I recommend in this area.

Savour

02savourI love eating in local style warungs or cafes. Sometimes they can be a little heavy but there are plenty now that use coconut oil and no MSG with organic vegetables from the Bedugal area of Bali, grown in fertile volcanic soil. Bambuku on the insalubrious Sunset Road is fantastic. Best beef rending of maybe anywhere (according to my father) and fresh vegetables, tofu and lots of yellow and brown rice.

For finer dining I head to Merah Putih, meaning red and white after the colours of the Indonesian flag. Serving traditional and modern Indonesian food it is also architecturally stunning and built around eco principles to capture rainwater and minimize energy. Beautiful pillars dominate the room and food is sourced as locally as possible. I love the seafood curry and the bak pau buns for starters, and wonderful vegetarian tofu.

After dinner we usually head to Motel Mexicola for froxen margheritas and to soak up the atmosphere. It is an amazing eclectic canvas with every surface covered in murals, pictures, kitsch and tiles. The churros with caramel are incredible too if you still have room for something sweet.

Shop

03shop

Naturally I wear a lot of my own collection from the Bazaar. I know where it is made and I make sure it is produced ethically in villages where the people receive a fair price for the pieces. They are also all handmade that is a sign of the skill that is found all over Bali, with lots of villages producing anything from the crochet, weaves and batiks that go into The Eco Gypsy collection, to stone carvers, carpenters, artists and artisans that produce the rich array of Balinese handicrafts. It is important to keep these traditions alive and support the local community and cottage industry.

I am also a big fan of local markets too so I like to shop in Denpasar central market that is full of chaos and colour. I buy ikat fabric for the house, vegetables and flowers and biscuits from an old fashioned Asian shop that reminds me of visiting my grandmother in Malaysia. Jalan Sulawesi that runs off the main market is the place to come for fabric and is full of lace, batik and anything you desire by the meter. I have a lot of my clothes made so I like to have a good hunt around for exciting materials. Just be prepared to bargain hard around here and don’t get taken in by the touts who drive up prices by acting as ‘guides’.

Spa

04spaUp the coast in Tabanan is Alila Soori that has awards for sustainable building. It is a stunning spot on the black volcanic beaches and rice paddy fields and volcanoes sprawling behind. It is a wonderful drive up through villages and the coconut husk furnaces where they make terracotta tiles.

Once inside it is extremely zen. The traditional Balinese Boreh here is on another level. After an amazing ginger and lemongrass infusion, you enter a large low lighted suite that is amazingly tranquil. A massage with essential oils you have chosen is followed by the spicy scrub and mask, then you are wrapped up on a heated massage table in a cocoon.

This treatment was designed for royalty and especially before their weddings. Now it is widespread but Soori’s twist is exceptional. The heated massage tables add a different dimension of relaxation. All their products are also naturally made by Alila and can be bought. The black volcanic soap and their scrubs are amazing, as I try not to use many chemicals on my skin.

This is pure bliss; it is like floating aromatically afterwards. The setting is perfect for a few hours of escaping the world into luxury but within a really Balinese landscape.

Sunset

05sunset

Bali really does have some of the best sunsets in the world here. There are plenty of beachfront clubs to choose from. I like La Plancha in Seminyak for the super relaxed vibe of beanbags, colourful umbrellas, tapas and mojitos right on the beach. Combined with Baleric beats from dj’s and a different crowd it is always fun.

Kakilima on Sea up on Batu Bulong Beach in Canggu has fast become my other special sunset spot. My boyfriend can surf whilst I swim or play in their huge garden with our daughter. The sunsets here are incredible, a barbeque of fresh fish and kebabs is cooked in a gypsy caravan and cushions are scattered haphazardly about to eat, meet friends and get away from the busier areas. There is a laid back vibe here and it is still a surfing area with other great places to eat or party around, like Deus Ex Machina that often has live music and DJ’s.

Swim

06swim

I try and get out of town at least once a week to hit the more beautiful beaches of the south. There are still a lot of secluded spots and secret bays if you are willing to make the effort. Green Bowl is stunning but has a lot of steps so combines a workout. Padang Padang is always beautiful and relaxed and Nusa Dua is really easy with sun loungers, local warungs and white sand with azure sea mere meters away. This is where we usually end up.

Unfortunately more of the beaches on our side are becoming more polluted due to construction and an overload on the sewage system. Rubbish disposal is also a huge problem and at certain times of the year the beaches are covered. Locally I will go to Canggu and Seminyak in low seasons. However the main objective is to start cleaning up the island so there is no longer a question of where to go and swim, but restoring all of Bali’s beaches to beauty.

Spirit

07spirit

Spirituality is everywhere in Bali, it envelops you. It has it’s own magic that you can feel everywhere with the temples and offerings that are part of everyday life. Their special blend of Hinduism is unique to this island. Joining a local ceremony or visiting the temples and learning about their unique culture is a good way to feel the soul of this island. Or visit Tirta Empul for a cleansing ceremony with a local guide, not on a tour, or an introduction to a local priest who can help you discover the other side of Bali that is not just for tourists. Many of the temples are now packed with buses and shops rather than being places of contemplation.

There is a lot of fast spiritualism on this island now after Eat, Pray, Love. Some healers are now overwhelmed with visitors. There are loads of retreats, cleanses and other classes that are nothing to do with Balinese culture. It is better to get a local recommendation for healers; Pak Sirkus in Brawa Beach is very good, or an introduction to a local priest. Take your time to explore the temples, not just the major ones. Try and get an invitation to a full moon ceremony at night that is quieter and not full of tourists, this is a very special time to observe the magic of Bali. Simply stop, look around and wait to feel the sway of spirituality here, as it is literally all around you.
