Ecotourism is defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.” (TIES, 1990).
Tourism is the worlds largest industry based on its contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It generates 10% of the worlds GDP and employs over 10% of the global workforce and this percentage is still growing (World Tourism Organization 2007).
With the above in mind one can see the major impact tourism has on the world globally in all aspects. However it is also one of the least regulated industries in the world and ecotourism currently only makes up 10% of the global market.
With more responsible choices in the journeys we make, a lot of destruction and exploitation will naturally die out if demand shifts towards sustainable tourism. The Eco Gypsy aims to help its readers and customers to make more educated and ethical choices to bring about positive change through their journeys around the planet.
